Recovering from disease outbreak: Rapid Turf Recovery Following Anthracnose Pressure

The recent spell of hot, humid weather has created ideal conditions for anthracnose across many golf courses, with several turf managers reporting outbreaks following prolonged stress and irrigation challenges.

One course recently experienced exactly that scenario. After showing no visible symptoms at the end of the previous week, an irrigation failure over the weekend, combined with continued ripe conditions for disease development, resulted in anthracnose becoming evident early the following week. Fortunately, quick action has already delivered encouraging signs of recovery.

Following a high-rate application of Consolidate Plus (80 L/ha), supported by Consolidate P and an appropriate fungicide programme, turf quality has begun to improve within days. A follow-up application is planned next week to continue supporting plant recovery.

Supporting Recovery After Stress

While fungicides play an important role in managing disease, supporting the plant's recovery is equally important. Turf that has endured prolonged heat, drought and irrigation issues often requires additional nutritional support to restore vigour and encourage new growth.

This integrated approach has consistently delivered positive results over the past few seasons, with full recovery typically achieved within a couple of weeks under favourable growing conditions.

Lessons from This Summer

This season has once again highlighted how quickly stressed turf can deteriorate when environmental pressures combine. Heat stress, moisture fluctuations and irrigation interruptions all place additional strain on the plant, increasing its vulnerability.

As we move into late summer and autumn, maintaining plant health and supporting recovery will be critical for producing strong, resilient playing surfaces heading into winter.
