As temperatures begin to fall and disease pressure increases, winter management becomes one of the most important periods of the year for every turf manager. The goal isn't to chase growth – it's to maintain strong, healthy, resilient turf that can withstand the challenges of winter and recover quickly when conditions improve.

Our Winter Turf Nutrition Programme has been designed around three core products that work together to support plant health throughout the colder months: Winter, Turf Defence and K. Together they provide balanced nutrition, improve resilience and help your surfaces cope with the stresses of winter.

The Three Core Products

Winter

A balanced stabilised nitrogen feed containing calcium, magnesium, iron and trace elements to maintain healthy colour, density and overall plant strength without encouraging excessive soft growth.

Turf Defence

A liquid foliar compound containing phosphite, formulated to support plant resilience during periods of environmental and disease stress. Turf Defence helps the plant remain stronger when conditions become challenging and supports recovery when pressure increases.

K

A potassium-focused nutrient that supports water regulation within the plant, improves cell strength and helps turf remain firm and resilient during prolonged wet conditions.

Recommended Winter Programme

For best results, we recommend applying:

30L Winter + 20L Turf Defence + 10L K, every two weeks from September through to March, adjusting timing and frequency to suit your site's conditions and with guidance from your technical advisor.

By applying the programme throughout the winter and adapting the tank mix to suit changing conditions, Highwoods has maintained healthy, resilient putting surfaces with very little disease pressure, while achieving rapid recovery whenever disease has appeared.

Turf Defence as a Standalone Solution

Turf Defence also performs exceptionally well as an individual application.

It can be applied proactively when disease pressure is expected to increase or at the first signs of stress, helping strengthen the plant before symptoms become established. This gives turf managers another valuable tool to support plant health as part of an integrated winter management strategy.
